چکیده

In this paper we address the identifiability and efficient learning problem of finite mixtures of Plackett-Luce models for rank data. We prove that for any k ≥ 2, the mixture of k PlackettLuce models for no more than 2k−1 alternatives is non-identifiable and this bound is tight for k = 2. For generic identifiability, we prove that the mixture of k Plackett-Luce models over m alternatives is generically identifiable if k ≤ bm−2 2 c!. We also propose an efficient generalized method of moments (GMM) algorithm to learn the mixture of two Plackett-Luce models and show that the algorithm is consistent. Our experiments show that our GMM algorithm is significantly faster than the EMM algorithm by Gormley and Murphy (2008), while achieving competitive statistical efficiency.

Correlated Voting

We study the social choice problem where a group of n voters report their preferences over alternatives and a voting rule is used to select an alternative. We show that when the preferences of voters are positively correlated according to the Kendall-Tau distance, the probability that any scoring rule is not ex post incentive compatible (EPIC) goes to zero exponentially fast with the number of ...

Label Ranking Methods based on the Plackett-Luce Model

This paper introduces two new methods for label ranking based on a probabilistic model of ranking data, called the Plackett-Luce model. The idea of the first method is to use the PL model to fit locally constant probability models in the context of instance-based learning. As opposed to this, the second method estimates a global model in which the PL parameters are represented as functions of t...

Plackett-Luce regression: A new Bayesian model for polychotomous data

Multinomial logistic regression is one of the most popular models for modelling the effect of explanatory variables on a subject choice between a set of specified options. This model has found numerous applications in machine learning, psychology or economy. Bayesian inference in this model is non trivial and requires, either to resort to a MetropolisHastings algorithm, or rejection sampling wi...

Fast and Accurate Inference of Plackett-Luce Models

We show that the maximum-likelihood (ML) estimate of models derived from Luce’s choice axiom (e.g., the Plackett–Luce model) can be expressed as the stationary distribution of a Markov chain. This conveys insight into several recently proposed spectral inference algorithms. We take advantage of this perspective and formulate a new spectral algorithm that is significantly more accurate than prev...

Plackett-Luce Networks for Dyad Ranking

We propose a new method for dyad ranking, a problem that was recently introduced in the realm of preference learning. Our method, called PLNet, combines a statistical model for rank data, namely the Plackett-Luce model, with neural networks (feed-forward multi-layer perceptrons) in order to learn joint-feature representations for dyads, which are pairs of objects from two domains. The efficacy ...
